What to Expect from Piano Lessons

No matter what your age, you can learn to play the piano. Piano lessons aren't just for youngsters, but are ideal for adults as well. It's highly likely that there is at least one qualified instructor in your locality. There might even be several from which you can choose, depending on where you live. In this article you will learn more about what to expect from piano instruction and how to make the most of it.

If you've got the benefit of having numerous instructors in your area, consult with them all to find the best fit for your needs. You'll want a teacher that understands your personal and musical goals and is accustomed to teaching adults. This is simply because the methods used for teaching children and teaching adults can differ. It's important to also select a teacher that you are comfortable around, since you will be seeing them weekly. Price is another factor to consider. If you're on a budget, you'll want to find classes that you can afford. Rates are often set per class and paid each time you go for instruction, although this may vary according to the policies of your teacher.

Usually, piano instruction is held for one hour per session. Normally you will go once per week, although you may sometimes choose to go on a more frequent basis. At first, you will be taught all the fundamentals of the piano. How it works, how to position your hands, the correct posture to use. Then you will be introduced to sheet music and how to read it. Many people eventually learn to play piano by ear, however this is after they've learned the traditional method. After you're taught the basics, then you'll actually get to play the piano.

At your piano lessons, you can expect to be started off with extremely simple songs. Examples might include Row Your Boat or Three Blind Mice. It might be a bit frustrating to be pecking out nursery rhymes when you really want to be pounding out Beethoven, but be patient! The more you practice, and the more classes you complete, the more skilled you will become. Your instructor will advise you to practice at home as much as you can, and may even send you home with some practice sheet music or helpful literature.
