Starting a Career as a Piano Teacher

Many people who love playing the piano eventually decide to start a career as a piano teacher. This is especially true for individuals who had a positive experience with their own piano lessons. There are various ways to begin your career as a piano instructor. Some people go to college and major in music or teaching. Often, the people who do this end up teaching music at a school and often give piano lessons on the side. But what if you didn't go to college to learn how to teach music?

You can still build a thriving business as a piano instructor with a bit of hard work and planning. First, check with your local government to find out what licenses and forms you'll need. It's important to take care of the legalities and paperwork before starting your business. Once you've taken care of legalities, it's time to think about other aspects of your business.

For example, you must decide if you will give lessons from your home or in a studio. Some teachers even travel to the homes of their students for lessons. If you do this, you'll find that you may be able to charge a bit more for your services. What you'll charge will vary depending on many different factors. You'll want to keep your rates close to the rates of all the other teachers in your area, perhaps a bit less. Most teachers charge by the hour, which is normally the length of an average class.

After you've worked out all the details, it's time to acquire your teaching supplies. This might include various types of sheet music, charts and notes to give your students. It's wise to work out a syllabus for students of varying skill levels before ever holding classes. You need to be prepared and confident in your teaching ability. If you've never taught before, try holding some practice classes with friends and family to build your confidence and test out your teaching methods.

Advertising is a very important part of building your career as a piano teacher. After all, you won't get any students if no one knows you exist! Try placing ads in local newspapers for a start. Make some colorful flyers and post them anywhere you can. Have business cards made and hand them out to everyone. Good advertising is an important part of any business, and teaching piano is no exception!
