Tips for Performing at a Piano Recital
A piano recital is basically a performance where students play a piece or pieces they've learned during their studies in front of a group, usually friends and family. You might associate lessons and recitals with youngsters, however it's becoming more common for adults to take piano lessons as well! No matter how old you are or how long you've been practicing, a recital can be stress inducing. Luckily, there are some ways to reduce the stress and make a recital more enjoyable.
First, decide what piece you'll be playing. Choose something that you enjoy, and something you feel confident about. It goes without saying that practice is crucial. When preparing for a recital, you'll want to practice twice as much as you normally do. Practice in front of people, the more the better. The goal is to learn the piece you'll be playing the best you can, and eliminate your performance anxiety by becoming accustomed to playing in front of people. You might even want to tape yourself playing then listen to the tape to see areas where you need improvement.
When recital day draws near, make sure you have everything ready ahead of time. Get your sheet music ready and choose clothing that you feel comfortable and confident wearing. You definitely don't want to go too casual, although there's no need to deck yourself out in a sequined evening gown, either. Choose an outfit that you would wear to a nice restaurant, something classic, conservative yet flattering. For ladies, this probably means a pretty dress or skirt ensemble. Guys will most likely want to wear nice slacks, button up shirt, a tie and perhaps even a jacket.
If you've prepared as much as you can but still find yourself feeling nervous before the recital, try some deep breathing. Take long, slow inhales through your nose, pause a moment, then slowly exhale. Choose a calming word or phrase to repeat in your head when you feel anxious. If your stomach reacts negatively to anxiety, try some soothing herbal tea or even a peppermint candy. The best thing you can do other than practice is to relax! Above all, a piano recital should be enjoyable for you and your audience. Once you get through your first recital, you'll feel more confident and ready for the next one!
