How to Read and Play Piano Music

If you are brand new to the world of piano playing, then you're probably seeking all the help you can get regarding how to read and play piano music. While it's true that many people enroll their children in piano lessons at a young age, even adults can learn to play. However, it can be a bit more difficult for an adult to pick up a new skill like piano than it is for a young child, probably because youngsters' minds are so open to new things. That doesn't mean it's impossible for an adult to learn how to play, however. You just need the right guidance!

The first thing you'll want to do is seek out a good teacher. Many piano teachers place ads in newspaper classifieds announcing their services. Or, you could ask friends, relatives or peers to recommend a good teacher to you. Often times, schools and religious facilities are ideal places to find an affordable, knowledgeable instructor. When you first begin piano lessons, you'll find that things move slowly. This is because it's important to understand the basic rules of piano before ever starting to play. Eventually, your teacher will work you up to playing music of increasing difficulty.

In addition to weekly classes, you should also read as much as you can on the subject of piano playing and practice as much as you can. One easy tip for making practice easier is to tape a little piece of paper with the picture of the note on each piano key. This will help you find the proper keys until you are able to memorize them. In addition to learning to read sheet music, you'll also want to learn to play by ear. This simply means that you are able to listen to a piece of music and play it back without reading from a sheet. Of course you'll want to learn to read sheet music first, but once you do, playing by ear can be fun and creative.

There are many ways to learn how to read and play piano music these days. In addition to reading books and taking classes, you can get online. There are lots of web classes designed to teach piano, and these classes can be an excellent addition to other methods of instruction. Solid instruction and a great deal of practice can be all you need to be on your way to mastering the piano!
