Many teachers choose to conduct classes from their homes. This can be a good choice if you have a good piano and enough space. Other piano instructors actually make housecalls, traveling to their students' homes for classes. Still others rent a building or studio in which to conduct their classes. It's simply a matter of personal preference. You'll often find that you'll get more business if you offer classes at your home yet also offer housecalls for students who want to be taught at their residences. Once you decide where you want to offer lessons, you'll need to get all applicable licenses. Check with your municipal building to find out exactly what kind of licenses you will need. Also, you will need to devise a plan for paying taxes on your income. Most self employed people pay quarterly. You may want to hire an accountant or at least consult one if you have questions.
Speaking of finances, you'll also need to figure out how much you want to charge. Because instructor's fees can vary widely, do some checking to find out what other teachers in your area charge, then price your services accordingly. Most piano lessons are around one hour, so keep that in mind when setting your rates. After you've figured out how much you want to charge, you may want to stock up on sheet music and teaching aides for students of all skill levels from beginner to advanced.
Finally, it's time to advertise your services as a piano teacher! There are many different places where you can advertise. A good place to start is your local newspaper. If you can, leave flyers with schools and post them on community bulletin boards. Hand out business cards anywhere that you can. Before you know it, you'll have your very first student!
