Hand Exercises for Students Taking Piano Lessons

With continuous repetitive hand motion during piano practice, there is the risk of suffering repetitive stress injury as well as carpal tunnel syndrome. This is why it's a good idea for students taking piano lessons to do a variety of hand exercises to strengthen the hands and wrists and improve flexibility. Some of these exercises are done on the piano, while others are done without it. Try to do a set of hand exercises once or twice a day for optimum results.

Before ever sitting down at the piano, it's important to warm up. The following exercises can be done in a mere five minutes or so, and should be done before each practice session. First, extend your arms and wrists out in front of you. Palms should be facing out. Hold this position for approximately five seconds. Next, relax your hands and fingers. Now you'll want to make a tight fist with both hands. Bend your hands down at the wrists, hold for five seconds, then release. Repeat five to ten times. You might also want to do some simple wrist rotations as well.

When you sit down at the piano and prepare to play, you want to make sure your posture and hand positioning is correct. Your feet should be planted firmly on the floor, and your back should be straight. The forearms should be parallel to the floor. You should feel comfortable and not rigid or unnatural when in the proper position. Now it's time to move on to exercises for hands that are done on the piano. Your teacher should provide you with a variety of different ones, but if you want to practice at home there are some ways to do so. Regular practice of chords and triads is an ideal way to strengthen and flex the hands and wrists. Also, try practicing your scales and ask your instructor if there are any particular pieces of music they recommend for the purposes of strengthening and improving flexibility.

You may also be able to find sheet music or books dedicated to improving hand and wrist flexibility at your local music store or bookstore. Sometimes, you can even find printable exercises in sheet music form on the web. To learn more, follow the links on this page or click on the graphic in the navigation menu to the right.
