Digital Piano vs. Traditional Piano -- Which to Choose?
Nowadays, there are plenty of choices and different types as well for someone who is seeking to buy a piano. If you want to learn how to play piano, you will definitely need one to practice on. When most people think of a piano, they think of what are called acoustic pianos, which include grands and uprights. In addition to the old-fashioned acoustic pianos, there are also electric or digital piano choices. Both acoustics and digitals have their own benefits and drawbacks, which will be explored in this article.
Let's first explore the costs of both digital and acoustic pianos. The traditional acoustics vary in price depending on brand, size and condition. Prices for acoustic pianos begin around $2,000 and can go up to the tens of thousands of dollars. It's rumored that pianist and vocalist Tori Amos' beloved Bosendorfer costs $100,000! You may be able to find a decent acoustic piano for less than $2,000, but it will probably be used. Digital and electric pianos start in the hundreds and normally range up to about $2,500 with the average price being around $1,000. All in all, you can expect to pay more for an acoustic than you will for a digital.
Now let's talk about features. An acoustic piano features 88 keys and foot pedals. They also come in a variety of different sizes from the giant grand to the small spinet. Digitals are much, much smaller, and are able to be carried in your hands. They are easily taken from place to place and perfect for any size home. You can get stands, benches, and foot pedals for digitals to provide yourself with an acoustic piano experience. Many digitals have 88 hammer graded keys which provide the closest thing to acoustic sound and feel without actually having one. One cool feature of a digital is the ability to plug in headphones while playing, which means no one but you can hear the music! Also, digitals feature a variety of effects and sounds that you just can't get with an acoustic.
If you're looking for a piano that's affordable, versatile, and portable, then a digital piano is your best bet. However, if you want a piano that's traditional and adds to your home's decor, then an acoustic might be right for you. No matter what kind of piano you end up choosing, try out several different models to ensure you get the best model for your money.
