How You Can Learn to Play Piano

In the old days when young boys and girls were required to attain certain accomplishments so as to be received into polite society, it was the prerequisite that everyone learn the piano. Even middleclass families, who liked to copy the upper classes, made sure that their children learned to play the piano well enough to show off among their friends. Well into the sixties, every small town has a nice lady who gave lessons. Children went to her house for one hour one day each week for these precious lessons. At least they were precious to the parents.

The children were supposed to practice each day so that they would be letter perfect for the year end recital. At these recitals proud parents beamed at their would-be-concert pianist. The sounds might have been agonizing for the outsider, but to the parents the music sounded as if it came from angels. Then sadly, at the end of the sixties, fewer and fewer children took piano lessons and many of these ladies stopped giving lesson. But fear not you or your children can still become accomplished and add learning to play the piano to your already overloaded schedule. Just as children were told a century ago, piano lesson will stay with you forever. It's true; the ability to make music is as close as we will ever come to angels.

Learning to play piano can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things you'll ever do. Many people begin piano lessons early in childhood, although it's never too late. Even if you're well into adulthood you can still learn how to play a piano and love it! These days, there are lots of options when it comes to learning this instrument. Let's take a look at the various ways an individual can become skilled in the area of piano playing.

You could go the traditional route and take lessons. Check your newspaper classifieds for piano instruction advertisements. Asking around can also help you find the ideal teacher. Many schools and churches can refer you to a fantastic piano teacher. The cost of piano lessons will vary depending on the individual rates and policies of your instructor. A retired, part-time instructor looking for something to do and a few extra dollars may not charge very much, while a full-time teacher who makes piano instruction a career may cost a bit more. Sit down and talk to a potential teacher to see if you feel comfortable with their personality. This is an important aspect of learning, if you're comfortable around someone you're more likely to learn more effectively.

Another option is to teach yourself piano. These days, there are books, videos, DVDs, instructional CDs and even Internet courses that can guide you through virtual piano lessons. This route can save you money on the cost of lessons and is perfect for self-starters who prefer to go at their own pace in the privacy of their own home. Regardless of how you choose to learn piano, you will need an instrument for practice. If you don't already own a piano, there are various options available to you.

Rather than investing in a traditional piano, which can cost a great deal of money, you may want to try a smaller portable keyboard. There are various models out there which contain all the keys that a standard piano does in a smaller size and at a cheaper price. Some of these keyboards even come with foot pedals you can hook up for the most realistic experience. And the best part is, they're easy to take with you if you need to travel. A good piano, or keyboard is vital when you're learning to play piano. Once you've got one, all you need is the instruction and the determination -- and you're all set!
